How SEO Has Changed for AI Search—and What Has Not
AI-driven answers have changed where discovery happens, but the qualities that make a page worth surfacing are largely the same ones that always mattered.
Read articleLocal search rewards businesses that are easy to verify: consistent details, specific service information, real proximity relevance and a maintained profile.
Local results are assembled from a different mix of signals than ordinary organic listings. Relevance to the query, distance from the searcher, and how established the business appears all contribute. That combination is why no business ranks first everywhere: results legitimately differ street by street, and any promise of a fixed local position ignores how the system works.
For a service business, this means thinking in terms of the areas you can credibly serve and the specific services people search for, rather than a single city-wide ambition. Someone searching for a treatment, repair or consultation is usually close to acting, so the goal is to be an obvious, verifiable option at that moment—complete information, clear service coverage, easy contact.
Your business profile is often the first substantial impression, and frequently the whole interaction. Choose the most accurate primary category and add only secondary categories that genuinely apply. Complete the service list with the terms customers use. Keep opening hours, holiday hours, contact details and access notes current, because inaccuracy here erodes trust faster than almost anything else.
Beyond the basics, use the profile as a live surface. Add real photographs of the premises, team and work. Answer questions people ask. Keep service descriptions specific rather than generic. Where relevant, note practical details—parking, accessibility, languages spoken, appointment requirements—because those often decide between two similar options.
If you serve several areas or offer several distinct services, each meaningful combination deserves a page with real substance: what the service involves, who it suits, what happens at each stage, what it typically costs or how pricing is determined, and how to begin. Pages that differ only by a swapped place name add nothing and are treated accordingly.
Write from local knowledge. Reference the neighbourhoods and landmarks you actually cover, the travel realities of the area, the conditions or requirements common in that market, and the questions local customers ask. Link each location or service page from your main navigation or a clear directory so it is not stranded, and keep one page per genuine service-area combination rather than dozens of thin variants.
Reviews function as public evidence. Ask consistently and simply as part of your normal process, make it easy to leave feedback, and respond to what arrives—especially criticism—calmly and specifically. Never incentivise, filter or fabricate reviews: it breaches platform policies, and readers detect artificial patterns quickly.
Citations are the quieter half of trust. Your name, address and phone number should match across your website, business profile, directories, professional bodies and social accounts. Contradictions create doubt about which record is correct. Audit the listings that matter in your sector, correct the inconsistencies, and stop chasing volume for its own sake—relevance beats quantity.
Position tracking in local search is inherently variable, so measure outcomes alongside it. Profile interactions—calls, direction requests, website clicks, messages—tell you whether visibility is converting into intent. Search Console shows which local queries bring people to your site and which pages they land on.
Then close the loop offline. Note where enquiries say they found you, track appointment or job volume by area, and compare periods rather than days. If direction requests and calls are climbing while a tracked keyword wobbles, the work is succeeding. Local SEO outcomes vary by market and competition, so report movement with context instead of promising positions.
