What Is AEO? A Practical Guide to Answer Engine Optimisation
Answer Engine Optimisation is less about a new toolset and more about a discipline: publishing direct, verifiable answers in a structure machines and people can both follow.
Read articleAI-driven answers have changed where discovery happens, but the qualities that make a page worth surfacing are largely the same ones that always mattered.
For most of the last two decades, being visible in search meant occupying a position in a list of links. That list still exists, but it is no longer the only place a decision gets made. A single buying journey can now pass through a traditional results page, a map listing, a generated summary at the top of the page, an in-app assistant, and a conversational tool the person never visits your website from at all.
The practical consequence is that visibility has to be planned as coverage rather than as a single ranking. The question is no longer only "where do we appear for this keyword" but "which surfaces influence this decision, and is our information clear enough to be used on each of them". A clinic competing locally, a retailer competing on product discovery, and a software company competing on evaluation content all face the same shift, just with different surfaces carrying the weight.
The most significant change is compression. When a system synthesises an answer, it selects a handful of sources rather than presenting ten. That raises the cost of being merely adequate: a page that ranks in the middle of a results list may still receive traffic, while a page that is not among the few clearest sources on a topic contributes nothing to a generated answer.
The second change is how information is consumed. Generated answers pull specific claims, definitions, figures, steps and comparisons out of context. Pages that bury their substance in long preambles or split a single explanation across many thin pages are harder to use. Pages that state things plainly, attribute them, and keep related detail together are easier to retrieve from.
Nothing about AI search removes the need for a site that can be crawled, rendered, understood and used. If important pages are blocked, duplicated, slow, or dependent on scripts that fail, they are weaker candidates for every surface at once. Technical quality is the price of entry, not a competitive advantage.
Equally durable is the value of genuine subject depth. Search systems, however they are built, are trying to identify who actually knows something about a topic. That judgement is formed from the coherence of your content, the specificity of your explanations, the consistency of your entity information, and whether other credible sources reference you. None of those signals are new, and none of them can be shortcut.
Start by auditing whether your best knowledge is actually stated on your site in a form that can be quoted. Many businesses hold their expertise in sales conversations, proposals and staff experience rather than in published pages. Turning that into direct, well-structured explanations of the questions customers really ask is usually the highest-leverage work available.
Then tighten the mechanics around it. Make each important page's purpose obvious in its title and opening lines. Keep one authoritative page per topic instead of several overlapping ones. Ensure your business details, service descriptions and locations agree everywhere they appear. Add structured data where it genuinely describes the page. Keep internal links pointing to the page you want treated as definitive.
There is no mechanism to purchase, guarantee or reserve a place in an AI-generated answer. Anyone offering that is selling something they do not control. Generated responses vary by phrasing, context, region and model version, and they change without notice, which makes any promise of placement unsupportable.
The honest position is narrower and more useful: you can improve the clarity, credibility and retrievability of your information, and you can make sure nothing technical prevents it from being accessed. That improves your chances across every surface, including ordinary search results, and it holds its value even as individual products change. Treat AI search readiness as a quality standard, not as a separate channel with its own tricks.
